AMGEN
Thousand Oaks, CA

BACKGROUND:
When the world’s largest biotechnology company needed to expand their operations, they called upon Bechtel and R.F MacDonald Co. to assist in engineering a complex steam delivery system that would interconnect two remote campus power plants and provide for control of all boilers from a single DCS system.

PROJECT:
To furnish 1400 additional boiler horsepower to the campus steam distribution system, supply a new larger deaerator and condensate return system, increase efficiency, and control the new and existing equipment via a DCS system.  All this work was to be accomplished without interruption of the existing steam service.  In addition to these tasks, the control panels for the existing watertube boilers were to be completely removed with a new state-of-the-art control system.

AMGEN selected (2) new Cleaver Brooks Model CBLE 700 HP high-pressure, low NOx steam boilers, to meet the requirement of adding steam capacity to the system. The new boilers were added to an existing central power plant, which was completely renovated to accommodate the new equipment.  In addition to the Cleaver Brooks boilers, AMGEN selected a Cleaver Brooks combination deaerator and condensate storage system, Cannon Economizers, AMPCO stacks and SHIPCO condensate return receivers.

R.F MacDonald Co. worked closely with the general contractor, Turner Construction, to make sure the project went according to schedule and that all equipment was delivered and ready to go on the scheduled dates. Once all the equipment was set, installation began with an army of tradesmen working on the project. R.F MacDonald Co. provided on site assistance from beginning to completion to make sure the equipment was installed properly and that construction was never delayed. Our field service technicians placed the equipment into service and provided complete operator training to assist AMGEN’s power plant personnel.

R.F MacDonald Co. field service technicians also retrofitted all the existing power plant boilers and support equipment to interface with the new DCS system. Upon completion of this phase of the project, the next phase was to replace the control panels of the existing watertube boilers with a new PLC based control system.  R.F MacDonald Co. completed all aspects of this portion of the project including design, manufacture, installation, and start up.

AMGEN is now operating the combined steam plant systems as one and can control the entire system from a single computer terminal in either of the plants. They have achieved their goal of total control over a large campus with increased reliability and sufficient reserves in the event of a failure.

R.F MacDonald Co. supplied all the necessary steps to help make this project happen from technical support and equipment supply to start up and service. We have the personnel, products and skills necessary to handle projects of all type, up to and including complex ones like this one for AMGEN.
