GENENTECH
South San Francisco, CA
BACKGROUND: Since 1978, two years
after Genentech was founded, R.F. MacDonald Co. has provided boiler room
equipment and field service for this expanding bio-technology industry
leader. We have furnished over twenty Cleaver Brooks boilers for
Genentech’s steam and hot water requirements. These include firetube
and commercial watertube boilers.
We
have also been awarded an open-ended contract for ongoing pump repairs,
including Goulds pumps which R.F. MacDonald Co. exclusively represents.
PROJECT: Retrofit two existing Cleaver
Brooks 400 HP firetube boilers to comply with Bay Area Air Quality Management
District (BAAQMD) Best Available Control Technology (BACT) emissions requirements
and upgrade combustion controls and flame safeguard with state-of-the-art
Cleaver Brooks HAWKTM Boiler Management System.
REQUIREMENTS: Convert the existing
boilers to meet the BAAQMD emissions requirements of 25 ppm NOx and 50
ppm CO.
R.F. MacDonald Co. modified the existing boilers
to meet these requirements, yet retained the features of the Cleaver-Brooks
firetube boiler that has made it the most widely used boiler in the world.
These include the integral wind box in the front door for cooling and combustion
air preheat, single piece hinged front door, readily removable burner drawer
assembly for quick inspection and adjustment, and rotary air damper for
precise air fuel ratio adjustment and control. These features were
combined with the simplified Cleaver Brooks internal flue gas recirculation
system for NOx emissions control that was a primary objective for this project.
The following equipment to meet the required emissions levels was installed:
- Special 24” Combustion Air Impeller
- 30 HP Blower Motor
- Cleaver Brooks High Turndown Burner
Assembly
- Induced Flue Gas Recirculation Damper
System
- New Motor Starter, Fuses and Overloads
The major functions and features of the
Cleaver Brooks HAWK™ Boiler Management System, which was also installed
as a part of this project, are:
- Utilizes solid state control and limit
sensors. Unlike conventional controls, these controls provide enhanced
safety since they cannot be jumpered. First out annunciation
and diagnostics of 73 separate faults are monitored and unit self tests
for proper operation.
- Boiler start cycle delayed release to
automatic firing rate modulation to reduce thermal stress.
- Non-volatile lockout and history files
with last (6) lockouts readable through integral LCD display.
- Unique characterization to the specific
boiler the HAWK™ is installed on for firing rate control, cycling control,
and system prepurge.
- Capability for remote or local communications
to a personal computer including the capability to change non-safety
related parameters remotely.
- Continuous monitoring of all applicable
sensors, including steam pressure, gas pressure, and oil pressure to
ensure signals are within operating range.
- Automatically returns the burner to
the low fire position before shutting off when power is interrupted.
These Cleaver Brooks boilers, upgraded by
R.F MacDonald Co. field service technicians, are now providing Genentech
with enhanced safety, additional diagnostic capability for improved operation,
and a simplified emissions control system for environmental compliance.
