PROJECT: Retrofit Existing Boilers
to Meet Low NOx Emissions Requirements
Three
Kewanee boilers sit side-by-side below the thousands of shoppers that
walk the floors above 365 days per year. The boilers are needed
to provide the heating and cooling for the shopping facility year round.
One of the boilers retrofitted, Kewanee Model KR88, a 350 HP firetube
steam boiler, was retrofitted to meet the Bay Area Air Quality Management
District’s Regulation 9 Rule 7. This regulation required retrofit
of all boilers with input capacities of 10,000,000 BTU/hr and greater.
The actual emissions test results are summarized as follows:
Actual Performance
NOx 21 ppm &
CO 3 ppm
BAAQMD Reg. 9 Rule
7 Emissions Requirements
NOx 30 ppm &
CO 400 ppm
The project involved new Power Flame Vector
Burners and controls to upgrade the existing firetube boilers. Two
of the three boilers were retrofitted and the third boiler received new
controls only.
Power Flame Vector burners were selected
for their industrial grade 3/16” steel plate construction, their compact
yet heavy duty packaged design, simplified induced flue gas recirculation
system, and the burner’s ability to produce emissions well below the requirements
of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
The Hillsdale Mall boilers, modified by R.F
MacDonald Co. field service technicians, operate well below the required
emissions regulations. Our goal is not only to upgrade equipment to comply
with air quality regulations, but to have the equipment operate substantially
below the required emission limits. This provides the equipment owners
and operators with the peace of mind that the equipment will operate reliably
within the mandated emissions requirements for many years to come.
