Cerritos, CA BACKGROUND: Kay International, with
offices in California and Russia, contacted R.F. MacDonald Co. in response
to their requirement to furnish ten complete boiler rooms in Khabarvsk,
a far eastern Russian city with a population of 800,000. Since the late 1940’s, heating systems built
in Russia were centralized. In Khabarvsk there are two electrical
power generation plants and one heating only plant, all coal fired.
The former operate as large scale co-generation plants with the heat rejection
piped throughout the vast city in about six hundred miles of above and
below ground piping to provide the city’s heating and hot water needs.
The hot water from the heating only plant is piped in a similar manner. After many years of operation, in a combination of open and closed loop piping systems providing both heating and domestic hot water needs, without water treatment and adequate maintenance, many residents especially in outer lying areas were without hot water completely. PROJECT: Khabarvsk, Russia - Ten Complete Boiler Rooms The project was performance based with no detailed specifications provided. A total of ten complete boiler rooms were required, each to have two heavy oil fired 600 HP hot water boilers, two primary hot water circulating pumps, make up water softener, expansion tank, control system and all interconnecting piping. Rather than have the equipment fit the available space of existing sites, completely pre-engineered identical boiler plants were to be provided and the sites would be made to fit.
To support the field installation requirements
thousands of miles away, R.F. MacDonald Co. provided fully detailed 3-D
CAD drawings in addition to scaled two-dimensional drawings. On site
field services to supervise installation and equipment start up was also
included in our proposal. The boilers were shipped on flat racks and all other equipment and accessories were containerized for ocean shipment from Seattle to Vladivostock. From Vladivostock to Khabarvsk the equipment traveled by rail. After the equipment for the first boiler room was received and rigged into place at a site to provide the heating needs for a complex of apartments in an area about 30 miles west of Khabarvsk, R.F. MacDonald Co. was contacted to supervise the remaining portion of the installation and provide equipment start up.
