Vernon, CA NEW STEAM BOILER PLANT
When it came time to configure a steam system for the new equipment for the expansion, Kronfli turned to R.F MacDonald Co. for the design of a new boiler plant. R.F MacDonald Co. working closely with Kronfli’s engineering personnel decided to utilize two 35,000 PPH reconditioned Cleaver Brooks watertube boilers that were immediately available and were in very good condition. The boilers were retrofitted with Alzeta Ultra Low NOx burners, capable of achieving less than 9PPM NOx when firing natural gas, and were immediately installed to meet a stringent construction schedule. Installation of the boiler and retrofitting of the burner was done simultaneously to get the first of the two units on line. Once one boiler was completed, installation began on the second unit. Additional boiler room equipment included in the plant design and installation was a new deaerator, feedwater pumps, blowdown equipment and new control panels. The installation was completed on schedule and the units were started up and placed into service to provide the expanded plant’s steam needs. For boilers with the fuel consumption capacity that was required for this project, energy conservation is a major issue. As a result and based on R.F MacDonald Co.’s recommendations, the boilers were equipped with Cannon flue gas heat recovery economizers and variable frequency drives for all motors, producing a very energy efficient plant. The energy savings help expedite the return on the original equipment investment. With escalating energy costs, the savings will continue to increase as time goes on. Today, these units are the backbone of Kronfli’s renovated and expanded plant operations. The Vernon facility continues to be one of the areas largest and most productive fabric facilities. |
