San Francisco, CA
Deep within the gleam and glitter of the elegant San Francisco Marriott Hotel sits a boiler room holding two boilers and two large water storage tanks. Together, the equipment is capable of providing heat and hot water for the entire 1500 room, 1.5 million-square-foot facility. The Marriott Hotel is located next to San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center. The hotel consumes an average of 165,000 gallons of water per day, with peak loads averaging 9,500 to 12,500 gallons per hour. The boiler room is located on the bottom floor of the hotel, necessitating high pressure vessels to handle the high static hydraulic pressure created by the high-rise building. Cleaver Brooks boilers and Ace Buehler storage tanks were selected by the hotel as the vendors best able to provide the hot water and heat necessary for the mammoth facility. Cleaver Brooks firetube boilers are uniquely designed to handle simultaneous high pressure and low temperature operation.
R.F. MacDonald Co. and Marriott have a longstanding relationship, with R.F. MacDonald Co. also supplying equipment to the hotel chain’s locations in Dana Point, La Jolla, Los Angeles Airport, Monterey, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, San Diego, San Ramon, Santa Clara, and Woodland Hills, Calif. R.F. MacDonald Co. also provides ongoing field service to these facilities. Today, the Marriott remains pleased with Cleaver-Brooks and Ace equipment’s outstanding performance. The spectacular hotel features bold designs and architectural characteristics. Boasting 100,000 square feet of meeting space, the Marriott has every convenience imaginable, including a stunning 40,000 square foot ballroom and the city’s largest indoor pool, complete with saunas and steam baths. It is the ultimate conference and convention hotel.
Facility engineers take pride in their performance and equipment – pipes are color-coded to indicate their purpose, floors are mopped daily and equipment is polished and detailed. The boiler room reflects the level of pride and professionalism associated with Marriott hotels. Jim Mattocks, the director of engineering design for the Marriott Hotels, Resorts and Suites, worked closely with the mechanical contractor during construction. With R.F. MacDonald Co., they selected the Cleaver-Brooks and Ace equipment to keep the hotel’s hot water usage operating at maximum efficiency. Domestic hot water is supplied by two 10,000 gallon storage water heaters. The main kitchen has a dedicated 1,000 gallon storage water heater. Two 770 gallon storage water heaters supply the banquet and ballroom facilities. All of the water heaters use double wall heating coils for maximum protection of the domestic hot water. The boiler room’s performance has not gone unnoticed. Tours are conducted regularly, with many engineers from all over the world visiting the Marriott boiler room. Give them a call if you’re in the area. |
