RIO BRAVO TOMATO COMPANY
Buttonwillow, CA

BACKGROUND: Rio Bravo Tomato Company was formed in 1998 when a group of five farm owners in the Bakersfield area decided to commit farming land to grow tomatoes in place of cotton and at the same time proceed with plans to build a tomato processing facility near Buttonwillow, California.  Initial plant operation required a 4800 ton/day tomato processing facility with a 240,000 pph peak steam demand at 350 psig saturated conditions.  Commercial operation was scheduled for July 2000 and the first truck load of tomatoes entered the production line on July 7, 2000.

300,000 PPH STEAM PLANT

With An Ultra Low NOx Emission Requirement of 9 PPM

PROJECT: Deliver and install a 300,000 pph steam plant to support the 4800 ton/day tomato processing operation. The boilers were specified to operate at 350 psig, saturated steam conditions and fire natural gas fuel with an ultra low NOx emission requirement of 9ppm.

At the heart of the steam plant are two (2) 150,000 pph Cleaver-Brooks factory-assembled boilers. The boiler design includes membrane wall construction for the furnace ‘D’ tubes, division wall tubes and boiler sidewall tubes.  To comply with the 9 PPM NOx emission requirement, Todd Combustion RMB Ultra Low NOx Burners were selected.  Todd Combustion 9 PPM low NOx burners are widely used on R.F. MacDonald Co. projects.  The FD fans and FGR systems are sized to meet the 9 PPM low NOx emissions with an ambient temperature of 110°F.  Full metering combustion controls, with an Alternate Monitoring System (AMS) featuring ‘WonderWare’, are provided for each boiler to control the ultra low NOx burners and monitor emissions as required by the Federal EPA.

The balance of the plant, including the deaerating feed water heater, feedwater pumps, water softening system, continuous blowdown heat recovery, chemical feed, intermittent blowdown, and the main fuel gas PRV and monitoring station were provided by R.F. MacDonald Co.  Additionally a 100 hp Cleaver Brooks firetube boiler was provided for aseptic service.

Start-up services, load testing, source testing, operator training and AMS certification was also conducted by R.F. MacDonald Co.

Todd Combustion RMB Ultra Low NOx Burners have been installed on a total of 51 boilers and 16 air heaters. Of the combined total of 67 RMB installations, R.F. MacDonald Co. has been involved with 25 of the installations; 23 boiler installations and 2 air heater installations.
