BACKGROUND: Since the first Cleaver Brooks boiler was furnished in 1958 to the previous owner of the current Roche Bioscience site, R.F. MacDonald Co. has furnished and continues to service 18 Cleaver Brooks boilers. PROJECT No. 1: Replace two existing high pressure steam boilers with new Cleaver Brooks Model 4 watertube boilers complete with flue gas heat recovery and oxygen trim systems.
NEW BOILER PLANT IN FOUR DAYS! While all bidders except one believed a costly temporary boiler installation would be required to install the new boiler plant, R.F. MacDonald Co. made a commitment to complete the project in four days – the maximum number of days available. The cage washing facilities had to have steam on the fifth day or the facility would not be in compliance with FDA requirements. The
project involved the removal and replacement of two existing boilers.
Flue gas heat recovery and oxygen trim systems were also installed to
provide maximum fuel efficiency. The existing boilers were inefficient,
required costly coil replacements frequently, and were extremely noisy
– even neighbors several hundred yards away complained regularly.
The new Cleaver Brooks boilers are more efficient, require only routine
maintenance, and are far less noisy – only 79 dBA at high fire.
As scheduled steam was flowing on the fourth day.
PROJECT No 2: Retrofit three existing North American 600 HP firetube boilers to comply with Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Best Available Control Technology (BACT) emissions requirements with new Power Flame Vector burners complete with new fuel trains and flame safeguard and combustion control systems.
The Roche Bioscience boilers, modified by R.F MacDonald Co. field service technicians, are now operating with enhanced safety, additional diagnostic capability for improved operation, and a simplified emissions control system for environmental compliance. They also operate well below the required emissions regulations to provide the equipment owners and operators with the peace of mind that the equipment will operate reliably within the mandated emissions requirements for many years to come.
