Boiler Outside Sales Position

R. F. MacDonald Co. has an opening for an outside boiler sales position in the noted office location.

Position:

Outside sales position for the sales of boilers and related accessories primarily to mechanical contractors. This effort involves regular contact with the contractors and also specifying engineers who specify our equipment, ultimately purchased by the contractor. Our expectation is for outside sales personnel to be out of the office four days per week and in the office one day per week for meetings and to complete necessary paperwork. Office support is provided by an inside sales person.

Required Skills & Abilities:

Must have good knowledge in applying the customer’s parameters to the criteria of our various products including boilers, boiler accessories, and flue stacks. Must be willing to further their knowledge in these areas and any others that will be applicable for our company.

Must have the ability to perform boiler sizing and application calculations on the various boilers to assist engineers and contractors in proper equipment selection. Some in-house and formal factory training will be provided on a scheduled basis but the sales person is expected to seek the necessary level and frequency of training from the company’s resources in order to become proficient in these areas. Time in the field with our service personnel is expected in order to develop a hands on understanding of equipment operation and maintenance requirements. We believe these skills are essential in order to provide the maximum benefit to our customers by having a superior knowledge of product applications and operation. This process will maximize sales volume and sales margins.

Must have a good personal image, have empathy for the customer and the customer’s problems, and be willing and be proactive to do, within reason, what is required to solve problems for the customer. Must respond promptly and efficiently when called upon by our personnel or the customer, in order to promote the goodwill of the company and to assist in the improvement of sales. Must be a “self-starter” and exhibit a high level of output with minimal supervision. We believe our company is very good at what we do by having self motivated personnel that are very good at what they do. A commitment to excellence is expected.

Must display a willingness to learn, and to expand in the position. Must be able and willing to work the hours necessary to fulfill the needs of the position.

Must be a team player. Our sales philosophy is that by working together as a team we will provide our customers with the best of our collective resources and capabilities, thereby doing the best job possible and providing the greatest customer satisfaction. In this spirit our sales personnel are compensated, in addition to a base salary, by an incentive based on a percentage of the pooled monthly sales margins for the office and department in which they function.

Must be very detailed in paperwork. We sell equipment which becomes a part of a larger system. It is very important and, therefore, expected and required that our sales personnel provide specifications, proposals, and submittals detailing our scope of supply sufficiently to avoid misunderstandings between our offering and the project requirements.

Must have computer skills. Outside sales personnel must have lap top computers and be reasonably proficient with Word and Excel. We also use the ACT contact management program. Factory equipment selection and pricing programs are also utilized.

DUTIES:

  • Will report directly to the Sales Manager.
  • Will proactively call on contractors and specifying engineers to develop long term relationships and generate sales prospects. Will respond to these prospects by providing project specific proposals and specifications. This requires a complete review of project requirements and where applicable specifications, schedules and drawings. Will perform follow up on all quotations and keep management abreast of their status.
  • Will be responsible as our company’s primary contact for a general geographic sales territory and will make regular visits to specifically assigned contractors and engineers.
  • Will follow up, as quickly as possible, leads that have been provided by the Sales Coordinator (inside sales support person).
  • Will participate in industry trade associations. These associations typically have monthly meetings and annual trade shows. All sales personnel participate with typically two or three of these groups on a regular basis.
  • Will conduct regular lunch seminars for contractors and engineers to maximize exposure of our products and services.
  • Will be willing to perform other functions as may be required in order to maximize the efforts of the company in attaining sales, or improving service to the customer. Will realize that the purpose of the company is to fulfill a need for the customer and that it is only by performing this that the company will be able to grow and become more successful.
